Applications for Composer-Curator 2022 are now open and will close on Sunday 13th March at 11:59 pm.
We are looking to support six outstanding projects that are curated and produced by composers, music-creators and collectives located in Hull, Sunderland or surrounding areas.
These projects can take any form: outdoor performances, DIY gigs, orchestral concerts, club nights, gallery installations, livestreams, workshops. You can create these projects in any genre you want from jazz to grime to folk music. You make the rules!
Once you are part of Composter-Curator, you will be provided with up to £4000 for project costs, skills development sessions, practical guidance, expert mentoring and much more. Head to soundandmusic.org/compose/composer-curator for full details.
To apply, you don’t necessarily need to live or be based in these cities in order to apply. Although that would be brilliant, our aim is to support people who have some connections to these places and surrounding areas; people who understand these cities, their current scenes and their audiences and who want to build more thriving, inclusive and sustainable communities for new music in these cities.
Composer-Curator 2022 is building on the success of last year’s Hull and Sunderland programme which had a unique and diverse range of people, genres and settings. This includes a brand new biannual experimental music festival in Sunderland. Projects from the 2021 cohort are still in the works, such as a 12th century inspired choral and Makina mash-up taking pace in February at The Atheneum, Sunderland.
This will be the second year the programme will be partnered with Back to Ours, Hull and Sunderland Culture, two great organisations with the same aims as us — bring more new music to more people.
Victoria Johnson-Henckel, Head of Digital and Audience Engagement at Sound and Music said:
“As a national organisation, we are committed to supporting all composers and music creators across the UK to bring their extraordinary works and events to new communities – no matter where those communities are. Following the success of our first round of Composer-Curator projects in Hull and Sunderland in 2021, where we have been able to support six incredible individuals to develop and produce their events, establish wonderful new partnerships with Back to Ours and Sunderland Culture and learn a huge amount about these local scenes, audiences and sounds, we are once again delighted to be working in these cities, to build on what we have achieved so far and help a new round of composers and music creators realise their unique visions.”
Applications are open now and will close Sunday 13th March at 11:59 pm. Good luck!
