Edmund Hunt composes instrumental, vocal, and electroacoustic music. He came to composition via a degree in early medieval languages and literature. His PhD investigated creative approaches to early medieval text in contemporary composition.

Rather than recreating medieval music, Edmund uses a contemporary musical language, inspired by the sounds and ideas of the twenty-first century. His pieces frequently make use of electronics and new technology to explore the sounds of words and poetry through music. Edmund’s work has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and has been performed in the UK and across Europe by groups including BCMG, CHROMA, the LPO, and Psappha.

From 2020–2022, Edmund was lead composer on ‘Augmented Vocality: Recomposing the Sounds of Early Irish and Old Norse’, an AHRC-funded project at Royal Birmingham Conservtoire. During the project, he wrote pieces for ensembles including Bit20, BCMG, and the Hard Rain SoloistEnsemble.

In 2018, Edmund began to explore composition for dance, in collaboration with choreographers, supported by the Cohan Collective. Edmund’s Sound and Music New Voices project, Different Islands, is the culmination of his ongoing work for dance, ensemble and live electronics up to 2022.
