At Sound and Music we support a diverse range of talented composers to develop their work; we help audiences to discover and experience new music; and we enable children and young people to explore their musical creativity.
Our work sits under three strands, Artist Development, Audience Engagement and Education.
We work with a range of partners across the UK to deliver our work.

We are currently working in a hybrid manner, with a mix of in-office and remote working.
We use the term ‘composer’ to describe any individual who creates new work using sound or music, whether they perform it themselves or write for others — and whether they work with software, with notes on paper, through improvisation, or in other ways.
Whatever your methodology, we know that a professional qualification is not a prerequisite for the role of creating exciting, new and innovative work.
We also know that the word composer conjures many (often unhelpful) images and ideas, and we are working hard daily to change that, to challenge perceptions and to reflect all those composing across the UK today.
In short, we want to support you to own the term composer, and to crack on with the most important thing — creating!
We support and showcase the breadth of new music activity across the UK through our platforms including The Sampler.
We cannot promise promotion, but as long as your activity is interesting and will appeal to our audiences we will try to help spread the word.

Our current opportunities, listed below, are open for application at different times across the year.

- New Voices, our major artist development programme, has an annual intake, with a yearly deadline for applications in the summer . New Voices supports composers at pivotal stages of their careers to explore new ideas, new sounds and new music.
Find out more about New Voices and read the programme's eligibility requirements - Composer-Curator is a composer-led and curated national touring programme which supports outstanding live and digital music projects and events that engage audiences in new and innovative ways. It too has an annual intake and yearly deadline for applications.
Find out more about Composer-Curator and read the programme’s eligibility requirements - The Francis Chagrin Award is a small-scale grant to help composers get their new work to the next stage. It is open for applications at any time of year, with applications assessed in February, May and November.
Find out more about the Francis Chagrin Award and read the programme’s eligibility requirements - Adopt a Music Creator in collaboration with Making Music, is a unique scheme that pairs composers with leisure time music ensembles and groups to collaborate on the creation of a new piece. It also has an annual intake and yearly deadline for applications.

In line with our Fair Access Principles whenever possible, we offer constructive feedback to unsuccessful applicants to our programmes.
This ensures that applicants understand why they were not selected, and above all should help them move forwards in a positive frame of mind.
We hope our feedback will encourage composers to reapply where relevant, or to apply successfully to other opportunities.
Our Summer School is a week-long residential for young composers and creative musicians aged 14 to 18. It takes place yearly in August at The Purcell School, with applications opening at the start of the calendar year.
All places on the course are subsidised: we ask for a fee of £500 from those who can afford it, but those who cannot are eligible for partial and full bursaries.
