Over the next six weeks IOU Theatre will introduce three new commissions by emerging and established musicians and sound artists. These works were originally developed for Speaking Tubes, a sculptural sound installation made of gleaming galvinised steel and air-ducting tubes, designed to create a vortex of travelling sound.
Since audiences are unable to experience Speaking Tubes physically, IOU has worked with the musicians, using spatialisation technology to produce audio versions of each work that recreate the feeling of being immersed in sound. Audiences will be able to listen at home and feel as if they are standing in the centre of a virtual sculpture, which will enable them to hear the journey and movement in each work as the musicians intended. Audiences will experience the sonic elements of how the sound works within the physical space of the Speaking Tubes sculptural installation.
The original work, commissioned for Speaking Tubes when it first launched in 2012, was ‘Shooting at Clouds’ created by internationally acclaimed composer Yannis Kyriakides.
On Thursday 30 April 2020 IOU premiere the spatialised version of Kyriakides’ ‘Shooting at Clouds’. Visit www.ioutheatre.org to hear a premiere of Speaking Tubes’ Shooting at Clouds.
From Thursday 7 May 2020, IOU will introduce a new work from emerging and established musicians every fortnight, starting with sound artist, Katie English. Each work will be shared on the IOU website via sound cloud and can be listened to through standard headphones or speakers.
IOU will share new commissions by the following sound artists:
Thursday 30 April – Yannis Kyriakides, winner of the John Wagenaar Prize 2020
Thursday 7 May – Katie English, aka Isnaj Dui
Thursday 21 May – Loui Binns, aka Foetal Zulu and Sonorous Sounds
Thursday 4 June – Jo Thomas, winner of Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica in Digital Music and Sound Art 2012
Speaking Tubes was devised and created by IOU’s Artistic Director David Wheeler.
