The Alan Surtees Trust has opened its 2026 funding round, offering four grants of up to £2,000 to young performers whose work is rooted in folk and traditional music and arts from any culture.
Established in memory of Alan Surtees, co-founder and director of Shrewsbury Folk Festival, the Trust supports emerging talent in keeping folk traditions alive and evolving.
Grants are intended to support creative development and help talented young artists progress their work where financial barriers exist.
Who Can Apply
- Musicians, singers, dancers, artists or performers working in folk or traditional arts (any culture)
- Solo artists, bands or groups
- Aged 16–30 at the time of application
- Living in the UK
- Without significant existing financial backing
Applicants should demonstrate exceptional skill, talent and promise in their field.
What the Grants Can Support
Funding of up to £2,000 per award may contribute towards:
- Mentoring and expert tuition
- Rehearsal or creative space hire
- New instruments or equipment
- Recording and production of a debut album
- Promotional materials and marketing
- Research and development costs (including artist fees and travel)
Since its inception, the Trust has supported projects ranging from album recordings and video production to folk school initiatives and instrument purchases.
