The International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) is an international network of members from around fifty countries, devoted to the promotion and presentation of new and contemporary music. Sound and Music represents the British Section of the ISCM and supports British composers to have work performed at the annual ISCM World Music Days Festival.
Following a competitive application process, the ISCM British Section Board have selected the 6 composers who will be submitted to the ISCM International Jury for consideration. At least 1 will be selected for performance at the South Africa festival in November/December 2023. The shortlisted composers are:
“I am elated to learn that my piece, ‘Six Doors of the Invisible,’ has been shortlisted for the ISCM World Music Days Festival. I am extremely grateful to the panel and to Sound and Music for this surprising honour, and I have little doubt their selection was in no small part due to Laura Mancini’s incredibly sensitive, visceral and stirring performance.”
“It’s such a pleasant and welcome surprise to hear my choral work Not Been Found has been shortlisted in the British Section for the ISCM World Music Days 2023! I wrote it on the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain’s fantastic Young Composers scheme, in response to their theme of “discovery”. Thank you for giving it the opportunity to be discovered by a wider audience through the ISCM network!”
“i’m pleased on behalf of the idea in the piece – that orchestral hierarchies need to be re-examined and deconstructed. i’m grateful that that principle in particular has been supported.“
“I am absolutely thrilled and honoured to be shortlisted as a composer. It is a great recognition of my work and an incredible opportunity to share my music on a global stage. I feel grateful for the support and encouragement of Sound and Music and ISCM and I very much look forward to this prestigious event.”
“It was such a happy surprise to hear that shouting forever into the receiver has been shortlisted for the 2023 ISCM British section. Huge thanks to the panel members, and to SWR for commissioning the piece for Ensemble Modern and Vimbayi Kaziboni. We had lots of fun bringing it to life at Donaueschinger Musiktage in 2022, and I’m delighted by the prospect of its legacy continuing at this year’s World (New) Music Days Festival in South Africa.”
“I am delighted to have been chosen for this shortlist. Over the years so many artists that I admire greatly have been selected for the British section, and I’m really overwhelmed to be part of this group.“
